Woman admits to smuggling 400 people into Denmark

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- A 43-year-old woman admitted a role in the largest human smuggling case in Denmark's history, court officials said.

The woman said she helped people from her home country, the Philippines, into Denmark by distributing fake travel visas.

The Copenhagen Post reported that the court believes the defendant helped 493 illegal immigrants, 300 of whom moved on to other countries, such as France and Italy.

The woman, identified only as IPB, said she wasn't aware she was doing anything wrong until she was arrested.

"I just wanted to make it easier for people to come visit their families," she told the court. "I had no idea what I was doing was illegal."

The Copenhagen Post said the woman worked at a travel agency that is now bankrupt and the false documentation came from the company's office.

The packages she provided included flight tickets, a travel visa, temporary accommodation, pocket money and a phone card, The Copenhagen Post reported.

Prosecutors said they are seeking an eight-year prison sentence followed by deportation if the woman is convicted of the charges.
