Father investigated for abusing son, 9

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Police said a man in Saudi Arabia is being investigated after he allegedly poured scalding hot water and tea on his 9-year-old son.

The man also allegedly stubbed cigarettes out on his son's skin, beat him with a stick and kept him from leaving his room for days, Gulf News reported.

Authorities have also summoned the mother for failure to alert the police about the abuse, Gulf News reported.

The boy's grandfather reported the abuse to the Protection Home, a shelter for abused people.

The grandfather said in the report that his son took drugs and never had an identity card issued for his son, Rakan, which is necessary for him to attend school.

Rakan, who is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in his hometown of Jeddah, refused to go home with his parents because of the abuse, Gulf News reported.

"Whenever I suffered from the scalding hot liquids or terrible burns, no one rushed to help me or to treat me," he said.
