Order restored at Mexican prison

Feb. 3, 2013 at 11:36 AM   |   Comments

MEXICO CITY, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Mexican authorities said they opened a dialogue with prisoners who rioted at the Marias Islands complex during the weekend.

A delegation of federal officials planned to meet with leaders of the uprising this week to discuss their demands.

Four guards and five inmates at the crowded facility were injured in Saturday's violence, but order was restored late Saturday, Federal Police said.

The prisoners' demands were still unclear Sunday. El Universal said the prison has been under the scrutiny of Mexico's National Human Rights Commission for the low quality of the food and medical treatment and over alleged beatings carried out by the guards.
