NORTH SUMATRA, Indonesia, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Residents said floodwaters in the North Sumatra province of Indonesia submerged hundreds of homes, plantations and mosques.

Antara News Agency said the floodwaters began to rise Friday evening due to the overflow of a nearby river.

In Tanjung Pura, floodwaters measured more than 1 foot high, Antara said.

The rainy season in Indonesia has set off flooding and landslides in a number of cities, including Jakarta and Sukabumi, with incessant rains falling in some cities for the past week.

Antara said 60.9 million people live in the nation's 315 districts and cities that are prone to floods during the rainy season.
