PATAN, India, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Twenty-three people were killed when a van carrying pilgrims was hit by a bus near Patan in the Indian state of Gujarat, officials said.

Most of the victims were members of a family returning home Wednesday after praying at a dargah, an Islamic religious shrine, CNN-IBN reported.

A number of the victims were women and children, officials said.

Officials said several of the injured were in critical condition.

Police say the van was picking up passengers when it was struck by a Gujarat state transport bus.
