AMMAN, Jordan, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Jordanian King Abdullah has met with Hamas politburo chief Khaled Meshal in Amman to discuss unifying Palestinian groups, officials said.

At the meeting Abdullah stressed his support for reconciliation efforts between Hamas and Fatah, saying it was the only way to strengthen Palestinian unity and assist them in achieving their rights, The Jordan Times said Tuesday.

Meshal said Hamas is committed to any steps that will unify the Palestinian people, the newspaper said.

He had said the aim of the meeting is to consult the Jordanian leadership on all issues, especially the Palestinians.

"There is a high degree of understanding and we are committed to more coordination with the Jordanian leadership," he said.
