Briton sentenced in high-profile drug case

BALI, Indonesia, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- An Indonesian court has sentenced a British man to six years in prison in a drug smuggling case that involved a 56-year-old grandmother.

Julian Ponder, 43, of Brighton, was cleared of smuggling charges but convicted of possessing 23 grams of cocaine, the BBC reported Tuesday.

Ponder's lawyer said he would advise his client not to appeal the sentence which he described as "quite light."

Two other Britons arrested in the May 2012 case drew sentences of four years or less.

But grandmother Lindsay Sandiford of Cheltenham was sentenced to death by firing squad last week after being convicted of cocaine trafficking in the case.

Sandiford said she was coerced into carrying drugs into the country by criminals who threatened her family.

The legal charity Reprieve said Sandiford has no money for an appeal that involves filing a complicated legal document in the Indonesian language.

The charity along with solicitors Leigh Day & Company have filed a judicial review in the UK on Sandiford's behalf.
