Earthquake hits Kazakhstan

ALMATY, Kazakhstan, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Kazakhstan Monday afternoon, the country's Education and Science Ministry reported.

The quake's epicenter was 230 kilometers (142 miles) southeast of Almaty, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), China's Xinhua News Agency reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey earlier measured the earthquake at 6.0 on the Richter Scale.

It was felt in Almaty as "tangible horizontal swings" that lasted 3 to 4 minutes, the Kazakhstan news agency Tengri News reported, noting swinging lamps in the streets and cracking windows.

No injuries were reported.
