Voters protest Pakistan election process

Jan. 26, 2013 at 3:16 PM   |   Comments

KARACHI, Pakistan, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Political and religious leaders in Pakistan say they're staging a three-day sit-in to protest the nation's electoral system.

The protest, which began Saturday in Karachi, comes after the nation's supreme court ordered a new voter verification system, to be administered by the army during elections, Dawn News reported.

Protestors said government elections officials have refused to implement the verification system, calling into question the validity of the democratic process.

Protestors said they would move their sit-in to the Pakistani parliament building if their effort outside election headquarters is unsuccessful.
