Trains running in Athens after strike

ATHENS, Greece, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- The trains were running on time again Saturday in Athens after the union workers on strike were forced back to their jobs, city officials said.

Protesting proposed wage cuts, the city's transportation workers Tuesday began rolling 24-hour strikes on the city's bus, trolley and train lines. Only the train workers have been forced back on the job, though city officials hailed it as a victory over organized labor, Ekathimerini said.

Labor leaders pledged to keep the buses and trolleys stationary until workers' salaries are restored.

"My colleagues were forced to return to work like slaves, with chains around their legs," Antonis Stamatopoulos, the union's leader, said. "They are not going to make me go back as well."
