Strike snarls Polish train travel

WARSAW, Poland, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Nearly 400 trains in Poland were delayed by a two-hour strike by railworkers, the state railway company PKP reported.

The brief strike, which began Friday morning, was prompted by plans to cut bonuses for rail employees and retirees, and followed the collapse of negotiations between the PKP and trade unions, Polskie Radio reported Friday.

"We wanted to call off the strike but the employers had nothing to offer us," said Leszek Mietek, chairman of the Confederation of Railway Trade Unions.

Delays of train departures of as much as 40 minutes were reported in Warsaw, Krakow, Katowice, Sosnowiec, Wroclaw, Poznan, Lublin and Czestochowa, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti said.
