WARSAW, Poland, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Poland's Cardinal Jozef Glemp, who died at the age of 83, will be buried Monday, the archbishop of Warsaw announced.

Glemp, who served as primate of Poland from 1981, the year martial law was declared in the country, to 2009, by which Poland transitioned from Communism to democracy, will be buried in the crypt of St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Warsaw, resting site of many Polish luminaries, Polskie Radio reported Friday.

He died Wednesday.

Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz, archbishop of Warsaw, said farewell ceremonies will begin Saturday.

The flag over Warsaw's Presidential Palace flew at half-staff in Glemp's honor.

"I think this symbolic gesture of mourning is the most appropriate form to remember the role Primate Glemp played during this interesting period in the life of the nation," President Bronislaw Komorowski said Thursday.
