BERGAMO, Italy, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- An explosion in an apartment building in northern Italy Thursday left six people injured, two seriously hurt, fire officials said.

The blast happened in the city of Bergamo, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

A 35-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man were taken to a hospital with burns to large areas of their bodies. Four other people were taken to the hospital, but were not in serious condition.

Firefighters said the explosion may have been caused by a gas leak.
