Al-Masry al-Youm said most of those injured were treated and released. Nearly half of the injured were police officers.
The conflict occurred in Marsa Matrouh Tuesday when residents, armed with guns, attempted to break into two police stations and the Anti-Narcotics General Administration offices, a security source told the Egyptian newspaper.
The suspects stole 38 private cars and 16 motorbikes, but the fights broke out after residents unsuccessfully tried to free 13 people convicted of smuggling and trespassing in a military zone.
Al-Masry al-Youm said security reinforcements were sent to the area to prevent further violence.
