MANCHESTER, England, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- A body believed to be that of an Indian student who vanished New Year's Eve was found Tuesday in a Manchester canal, British police said.

The body had not yet been recovered from the canal or positively identified as Souvik Pal, the Manchester Evening News reported. Pal was last seen just before midnight on Dec. 31 when he was thrown out of a party at a Manchester club.

Pal, 18, was studying product design at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Santanu Pal came to Manchester to join the search for his son, and friends also handed out missing persons fliers. The elder Pal distributed fliers at a Manchester United soccer game at the Old Trafford Stadium, near where his son disappeared.

The body was found in the Old Trafford area in the Bridgewater Canal.
