Basque separatists sentenced to jail

MADRID, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A man and a woman found guilty of trying to set up a branch of the Basque separatist group ETA in Portugal have been sentenced to prison by Spain's High Court.

The court gave Garikoitz Garcia Arrieta a 37-year-sentence while Iratxe Yanez Ortiz was sentenced to 22 years in prison, ThinkSpain reported Tuesday.

Garcia Arrieta was arrested in January 2010 while attempting to smuggle weapons, explosives and forged documents into Portugal from France.

Yanez Ortiz admitted being part of ETA after she was arrested crossing the border, police said.

At the trial, prosecutors charged the defendants were "commissioned to transport weapons, ammunition, explosives, components for making incendiary devices and equipment to manufacture false license plates from France to Portugal in order to set up a base in the latter."

A third defendant in the case was acquitted on grounds of insufficient evidence.
