UAE bartenders sued for botched bar trick

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Two United Arab Emirates bartenders are being sued after a flaming bottle being tossed as part of a trick allegedly exploded, burning patrons, officials said.

The bartenders, who worked at a nightclub in a five-star hotel in the capital Dubai, were tossing bottles as part of a regular routine when a bottle that had rum in it and was set ablaze exploded in midair, Gulf News said Monday. The flaming booze splattered on four nearby patrons, two of which suffered second-degree burns. One man was saved when a friend ripped off the man's shirt when it caught fire. A second woman suffered burns to her face and neck when the flaming liquid splashed her.

One of the bartenders testified the incident had never happened before, despite having performed the routine multiple times.

A judge has heard testimony and will offer a verdict later this month, Gulf News said. The patrons are seeking 21,000 dirham ($5,700) in damages.
