HAVANA, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Colombia's FARC rebels ended their unilateral cease-fire and called on the government to enact a bilateral truce during peace talks, officials said.

The unilateral truce was ended Sunday "with pain in our heart," said FARC's lead negotiator, known by his pseudonym of "Ivan Marquez," Colombia Reports said.

FARC, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, declared the unilateral cease-fire at the beginning of peace talks in November,

Despite the end of the cease-fire, government and rebel negotiators continue peace talks in Havana.

In anticipation of the FARC statement, President Juan Manuel Santos on Saturday said the government was prepared for a surge in rebel violence.

FARC carried out 57 attacks during the 60-day cease-fire, Colombia's ombudsman said.
