PARIS, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius Monday canceled a European Parliament meeting on Mali due to heavy snow that hit France during the weekend.

Fabius was scheduled to explain France's decision to intervene in Mali to the Parliament's foreign affairs committee in Brussels, Radio France Internationale reported.

However, the Parliament's website announced the meeting was canceled because of weather.

The French foreign minister was going to travel by train, but the heavy snow, which continued in France Monday, caused major delays.

French President Francois Hollande decided Jan. 11 to send French troops to Mali to help the Malian military fight Islamic rebels.

The United Nations Security Council has expressed concern over France's move.
