Syrian FM accuses Brahimi of conspiracy

DAMASCUS, Syria, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem has accused U.N. and Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi of conspiring against Syria.

"The mediator between two sides does not adopt one proposal against another, but rather he or she attempts to combine through bridging between two proposals," Syria's official news agency SANA quoted him as saying on state television Saturday. Al-Moallem accused Brahimi of adopting a similar position to that of the United States and the Arab Gulf countries rather than maintaining objectivity.

He also rejected any talk of President Bashar Assad's future.

"No one has the decision of legitimacy in Syria except the Syrian people," he said.

He accused Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey of supporting and funding terrorists in Syria and participating in a widespread plan led by the United States against the Syrian government.

"We have no delusions that these countries will cease supporting terrorism, but if the violence doesn't stop, this doesn't mean that comprehensive national dialogue will not be held," he said.

In order to solve the crisis, the current government will lay the groundwork for dialogue and transition over the next three months that will include all Syrians and the national opposition in and outside the country, he said.

All those who reject foreign intervention and violence will be able to communicate with the committee, he added.
