Afghan spies regret beating journalists

KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Afghan spy agency officials said Sunday they regret the beating of two Afghan journalists following a bombing in Kabul.

The incident occurred Wednesday when a suicide bomb blast at the National Directorate of Security spy agency killed or injured 33 people, Khaama Press reported.

Two journalists were trying to get closer to the area to report and Afghan intelligence officers beat them.

Afghan spy agency spokesman Shahfiqullah Tahiri said the officers were trying to prevent the journalists from getting closer to the scene and suffering serious injuries.

The incident came after the national union of journalists in Kabul called on media agencies to protest violence against journalists, Khaama Press reported.
