YANGON, Myanmar, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- A cease-fire between Myanmar's military and rebel fighters in the northern Kachin state seemed to be sticking, officials said.
There was some sporadic shelling and reports of fighting in the hours following the cease-fire that began early Saturday, the BBC reported.
The cease-fire came after 18 months of fighting between the military and rebels following the collapse of a 17-year truce in mid-2011.
Tens of thousands of people have been displaced since the conflict started in Myanmar, formerly Burma.
