Stromboli island volcano still erupting

STROMBOLI, Italy, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Experts said a volcano on the island of Stromboli in Italy was still erupting and spewing lava Friday, with no signs of stopping.

Tremors, ranging from medium to high levels, began Sunday, volcanologists said, and authorities were trying to determine if some residents of the island should be evacuated, ANSA reported.

There were concerns that people living on the shoreline could be hit by waves caused by the volcano, officials said.

ANSA said the volcano has frequently erupted in small bursts for centuries.

The volcano is on an island made famous by the 1950 film "Stromboli," starring Ingrid Bergman and directed by Roberto Rossellini.
