BEIJING, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- China's population at the end of 2012 was 1.354 billion, up 6.69 million from the total in 2011, the National Bureau of Statistics said Friday.

Of that, 52.57 percent of the people lived in urban centers, up 1.3 percent from 2011, the bureau said.

In 2011 China's urban population of 690.79 million for the first time exceeded the rural population of 656.56 million.
