VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- A British Columbia man trapped under piles of his own belongings was rescued by police after relatives said they had trouble contacting him.

When police and firefighters arrived at his home in Burnaby, east of Vancouver, they found the house stuffed with hoarded items nearly up to the ceiling, the Vancouver Sun reported.

After a search of the property, police managed to locate the man, whose legs were trapped, and free him.

He was taken to a hospital and may lose a foot as a result of being trapped, said Cpl. Dave Reid of the Burnaby Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

"This is a sad case," Reid said.
