ATHENS, Greece, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Greek lawmakers debated a new tax bill Friday that could raise more than $3 billion for the financially embattled government, officials said.

The bill was seen as crucial to help the government plan fiscal restructuring and boost Greece's credibility with its European partners, ekathimerini.com reported.

The so-called "mini" tax bill incorporates 31 amendments projected to raise $1.5 billion in extra taxes and $267 million from increased taxes on interest.

Some $3.07 billion would be raised from additional revenue and spending cuts.

Parliament will consider a so-called "national" tax bill later in the year.
