Serbs protest arrests at Christmas service

BELGRADE, Serbia, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Serbia has denounced the violence during the arrests of nine young Serbs by Kosovo police and called on international missions to help free the men.

The men were arrested Monday while attending the Orthodox Christmas liturgy at the Gracanica Monastery, Serbian news agency Tanjug reported Tuesday.

In a statement, the Serbian government said the arrests were a provocation by extremists in the interim Kosovo government.

The government called on international peacekeeping forces to help protest Serbian citizens in the ethnically divided southern province.

The Serbs were accused by Kosovo police of constantly following a security detail protecting Aleksandar Vulin, director of the Serbian Office for Kosovo.
