Greek woman to get $1M for tainted blood

THESSALONIKI, Greece, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- A Greek court awarded $1.05 million Tuesday to a woman infected with HIV during a blood transfusion, officials say.

An appeals court ordered the Ippocrateio Hospital in Thessaloniki to pay the unnamed 25-year-old woman after the court charged the hospital was negligent in treating her for a blood disorder, ekathimerini.com reported.

Investigators believe the woman became infected with human immunodeficiency virus, which causes AIDS, during a routine blood transfusion in 2005.

A 76-year-old patient also was infected with HIV during open-heart surgery.

The person who donated the blood that both patients received has been sentenced to prison.
