China market fire prompts code overhaul

SHANGHAI, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Shanghai's municipal fire codes are being overhauled in the wake of a weekend market fire that killed five and injured 14, city officials said.

City leaders demanded better fire prevention technology be installed in buildings and public areas, and called for the removal of potential fire hazards. The fire broke out about 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the Pudong district, where the city's largest wholesale farm market is located, Xinhua News Agency reported Tuesday.
