Senior Taliban leader captured

KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- An operation involving Polish and Afghan forces led to the capture of a senior leader of the Afghan Taliban, officials said.

Mullah Abdul Kabir, 54, was taken into custody Friday during an attempted robbery, Poland's Polskie Radio reported.

"He is charged with the mass murder of innocent Afghani civilians as well as the kidnapping and atrocious murders of local administration officials and members of the local police," said Capitan Janusz Blaszczak of the Polish contingent in Afghanistan.

"He is also accused of kidnapping for ransom and organizing attacks on civilian convoys and Afghan Security Forces, among others," Blaszczak said.

A statement by Poland's Ministry of Defense said Kabir had been on a Top 10 Most Wanted list in Afghanistan for five years.
