ROME, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Ex-Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said his party formed an alliance with another in a deal that could keep him from running for prime minister again.

Berlusconi's People of Freedom party resumed its alliance with fellow center-left Democratic party, the Northern League, ANSA reported Monday.

In exchange, if Berlusconi's party wins next month's elections, he has agreed not to run for prime minister, but would possibly put forth PdL Secretary Angelino Alfana as premier.

In that case, Berlusconi said he would possibly be the economy minister.

Berlusconi told RTL radio "an agreement was signed between us and the Northern League."

He said: "[National League leader] Roberto Maroni will be the candidate in Lombardy and I will be the leader of the moderates [at the national level]. The premier will be decided if we win."
