Mandela has recovered from surgeries

PRETORIA, South Africa, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Doctors said the former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, has recovered from his surgeries and lung infection.

The medical team said Mandela, 94, has made steady progress and he is still improving.

A news release from President Jacob Zuma said that Mandela underwent a surgery to remove gallstones last month and was also suffering from a recurring lung infection.

The release states that Mandela is receiving care at his home after being hospitalized for two weeks.

He was discharged from a Pretoria hospital Dec. 26 after undergoing surgery Dec. 15.

The positive news comes after his granddaughter said hurtful rumors were being spread about Mandela nearing death.
