ATHENS, Greece, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Many Greek Orthodox congregants braved frigid temperatures in Greece Sunday to dive into the sea and lakes to retrieve a cross in celebration of Epiphany.

As hundreds of the faithful marked the religious holiday with the blessing of the waters, the Greek Meteorological Service said a cold wave hitting the region would send temperatures down to 25 degrees Fahrenheit in the north Sunday night.

Strong winds and snow were forecast for the mountains and parts of the coast. Rain was expected elsewhere in the country.

Highs Monday were only expected to reach the mid-20s.
