Greece to crack down on tax evasion

ATHENS, Greece, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Greece plans to launch a new crackdown on tax cheats and corruption in order to reassure the beleaguered nation's creditors, sources told Ekathimerini.com.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras opens the Parliament next week with a list of reforms Greece has promised to undertake in order to stabilize the economy and pave the way for continued international assistance.

Among the steps Samaras will announce are audits that will ferret out tax evasion and illegally acquired wealth, sources said. Financial disclosure forms filed by various politicians and government officials will come under particular scrutiny.

Samaras, who meets Tuesday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, has vowed to bring an end to the virtually institutionalized tax evasion of the past, Ekathimerini.com said.
