QUEZON, Philippines, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Police said 13 men were killed in a shootout in the Philippines after they ignored a military checkpoint at the boundary of two towns and opened fire.

The Philippine Star said Saturday's gunfight lasted 10 minutes and the 13 men remain unidentified.

The Philippine Star said a police officer suffered a wound to his hand.

Police said they are investigating whether the men were hired guns heading to meet a client.

Officials attempted to pull over two sports utility vehicles at the border of Plaridel and Atimonan towns in Quezon province, when the men began shooting at authorities.

Eleven of the 13 men died at the scene, while two died on the way to the hospital.

Police said they recovered eight pistols and two rifles.
