KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- An Afghan girl was in critical condition after she was gang-raped this week in eastern Afghanistan, a provincial council member said.
Hamida Gulistani said the girl was attacked in Lalam Qala in the Moqor district of Ghazni province, and he alleged that local government officials tried to cover up the incident, Khaama Press reported Thursday.
Gulistani said at least four men entered the house where the girl lived and assaulted her but local officials did not confirm the report.
The Moqor district police chief said police hadn't received a complaint from the family of the girl, whose age was not revealed.
Members of a local anti-Taliban group said they had detained a suspect in the case, Khaama Press reported. Afghan police were in negotiations with the group to release the detainee to security forces.
