SANAA, Yemen, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- The Yemeni defense chief has offered a reward to soldiers who foil terrorist attacks, countering an al-Qaida bounty for the killers of U.S. personnel.

Defense Minister Mohammad Nasser Ahmed offered the reward Sunday to soldiers who arrest terrorists, saboteurs and smugglers, al-Sahwah.net reported Monday.

On Saturday, al-Qaida in the Arab Peninsula offered to pay tens of thousands of dollars to anyone who kills the U.S. ambassador in Sanaa or any U.S. soldier in Yemen. An audio message posted on militant websites said al-Qaida in the Arab Peninsula offered 3 kilograms of gold, worth about $160,000, for killing the ambassador.

Al-Sahwah.net did not report how much Ahmed was offering as a reward to catch terrorists.
