Detective Superintendent Dag Andersson will be the seventh person to head the investigation of who assassinated Palme on a street in Stockholm in February 1986, the Local.se reported Monday.
Andersson has worked for the National Murder Commission since 1989. He has been involved in investigating the 2003 murder of politician Anna Lindh and the arrest of serial sniper Peter Mangs.
Some 130 people have confessed to shooting Palme but the case remains open.
"There is an incredible amount of information to take in," said Andersson.
The current investigation leader, Hans Melander, will remain as head of the group looking into the Palme killing.
