BEIJING, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Four new subway lines opened for business in Beijing Sunday, increasing the system's daily capacity by about 1.5 million passengers, transit officials said.

Beijing Metro told China's Xinhua news agency the capital now has 16 subway lines capable of hauling more than 9 million strap-hangers per day and as many as 10 million on particularly busy days.

The new tracks included the all-new No. 6 Line, extensions to the 6 and 8 Lines and the completion of the No. 10 Line loop.

Beijing Metro operates 442 kilometers (274.6 miles) of subway track and plans to continue its expansion until it reaches 1,000 km (621.4 miles) in 2020, Xinhua said.
