KABUL, Afghanistan, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Afghan officials are predicting issues with the fourth round of security transitions from NATO-led coalition security forces to Afghan security forces.

Afghan army chief of staff Shir Mohammad Karimi on Sunday said military power will be handed off to Afghan forces first in eastern and volatile regions of Afghanistan, Khaama Press reported.

"Currently we are assessing the areas for the security transition where major security threats have been noted. Militants are actively operating in the regions who can pose threats for the transition process but this is not a concern for us", he said.

Karimi said the security transition was one of the main demands of the Afghan government and people and should be handled in a different way.

Security transition to Afghan security forces started last year and the process is expected to be completed in five phases.
