BANGUI, Central African Republic, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- The head of the African Union is scheduled to visit the Central African Republic for talks as rebel forces in the country advance toward the capital.

AU leader Thomas Boni Yayi will discuss the crisis with President Francois Bozize, the BBC reported.

The rebels, under the Seleka alliance, have accused Bozize of failing to honor a 2007 peace agreement in which he said fighters who laid down their arms were meant to be paid

Regional officials say both Bozize's government and the rebels have agreed to hold peace talks, although no timetable has been set.

Rebel officers have said they have no intentions of entering the capital of Bangui before peace negotiations begin early next month.

However, the BBC said rebels may attempt to depose Bozize.
