MAKHACHKALA, Russia, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Police killed at least seven suspected Islamic militants Saturday during a raid in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, an official said.

Police killed six of the alleged militants while storming an apartment where the suspects were surrounded, the law enforcement official, whose name was not reported, told RIA Novosti.

A seventh man was killed Friday night when he "opened fire on police officers in the cordon and tried to break through" to a house where militants were holed up, a spokesman for Dagestan's Interior Ministry said.

Two police officers were injured, RIA Novosti reported.
