KHARTOUM, Sudan, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- The rebel Sudanese People's Liberation Army accused the army of Sudan of killing five people in the country's contested Kiir Adem region, a spokesman said.

The Sudanese regulars dropped 20 bombs and launched a ground attack Wednesday, SPLA spokesman Col. Philip Aguer said.

The accusation came after Sudan's president Omer Al-Bashir declared his readiness to meet with his South Sudan counterpart, Salva Kiir Mayardit, to establish a demilitarized buffer zone on the 1,800-kilometer (1,118-mile) border between Sudan and South Sudan, the Sudan Tribune reported Friday.

Sudan Armed Forces spokesman Col. Al-Sawarmi Khalid Sa'ad denied the attacks Thursday, but reported armed clashes between the army and a Sudanese tribe in Sam'ah, a contested border region known as Mile 14.
