MONTREAL, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Montreal was digging out from nearly 18 inches of snow Friday and the storm that brought it headed for Newfoundland, forecasters said.
Montreal officials said despite about 3,000 city workers assigned to the task, it will take several days to clear the streets, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. The snowfall was the most the city has received since 1969.
The storm forced the cancellation of 225 flights at Montreal-Trudeau airport, the CBC said.
Blowing snow was still a problem in parts of Quebec.
Cornwall, Ontario, received nearly 20 inches and Ottawa got 7 1/2.
Environment Canada said parts of Newfoundland can expect 8-12 inches of snow along with easterly winds gusting to 60 mph. Eastern Newfoundland will see the snow turn to mixed precipitation and rain.
The storm is forecast to reach southern Nova Scotia by Friday evening and move across Newfoundland overnight and Saturday.
Winter storm warnings also were in place for northeastern New Brunswick.
