Church organist beaten Christmas Eve dies

HIGH GREEN, England, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- A British organist, attacked on his way to church to perform at a midnight Christmas Eve mass, has died of his injuries, police said.

Alan Greaves, 68, of Sheffield, England, was found on the pavement near his home. He had been on his way to St. Saviour's Church in the Sheffield suburb of High Green, Sky News reported.

The Rev. Canon Simon Bessant said: "He never arrived (at the church). Sadly, he was attacked about 250 yards from the church. His family were all at home and the police contacted them about midnight to say there has been an accident."

Police Det. Superintendent Matt Fenwick said, "Mr. Greaves appears to have suffered a brutal attack" in an appeal for locate witnesses.
