Nigeria struggles to shift maternal care to tackle mortality rate
IBADAN, Nigeria (GPI)-- At large public hospitals in Nigeria, overworked nurses snap at crowds of pregnant women, who wait hours to receive quality care. With 630 deaths for every 100,000 live births, Nigeria has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Government officials urge women to seek care at local clinics, but expecting mothers say they are unaware they exist.
