ANKARA, Turkey, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Turkish warplanes hit targets belonging to the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party in northern Iraq overnight, officials said Thursday.

The officials said the F-16s bombed camps and other targets around the Kandil and Zap regions in northern Iraq, Dogan news agency said.

The operation began after drone data indicated members of the militant group were going to previously bombed targets with the idea of resettling.

A number of shelters identified as belonging to the militants were hit overnight as well, Dogan said.

The group, known by its Kurdish acronym PKK, is fighting to establish a separate Kurd nation.
