Man allegedly killed grandparents in fire

MELBOURNE, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- A young Australian man was charged Thursday with killing his elderly grandparents by setting fire to their home.

Ross Konidaris, 24, was ordered held without bail, pending another hearing in April, the Herald Sun of Melbourne reported. He was surrounded by glass and did not look at family members weeping in the courtroom.

Konidaris said nothing during the hearing, nodding when he was asked if he understood he was being denied release. He was charged with two counts of murder and one of arson.

Triantafillio and Stavroula Konidaris died in a fire in their home in Yarraville, a western suburb of Melbourne, where they had lived for many years. Firefighters responded to the blaze at about 3 a.m. Saturday.

Konidaris' Legal Aid attorney requested a psychiatric evaluation.
