NEW DELHI, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- The victim of a brutal beating and gang rape that sparked mass protests in India arrived in Singapore for treatment Thursday, doctors said.

The 23-year-old woman's condition "remains extremely critical as before," Dr. Kelvin Loh told CNN.

As she arrived at the Singapore hospital known for its expertise in organ transplants, protests continued to rock the Indian capital New Delhi. Protesters, mainly students with some middle-aged and elderly women, have taken to the streets since word spread of the Dec. 16 attack aboard a moving bus.

The government has come under intense criticism for failing to adequately protect women and prosecute men accused of sexual assault. The protests turned violent Sunday when police in riot gear had amassed to crack down on demonstrators before the protest even began.

Six men have been arrested in connection with the assault. Police said the woman and her male companion boarded a private bus with tinted windows. Shortly after getting on board, the six suspects attacked and beat the couple, then raped the woman repeatedly before stripping them naked and dumping them on the side of the road.

The female victim has already undergone three abdominal surgeries in India to fix damaged intestines from the attack. Some questioned whether she was receiving adequate care, though her doctors said they were doing everything in their power before determining she was stable enough to be taken to Singapore for further treatment. She remains on a ventilator, CNN said.
