17 die in holiday car crashes in Italy

ROME, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- At least 17 people died in crashes on Italian highways Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, authorities said.

The victims included a couple and their 6-year-old daughter in the Molise region in southern Italy, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. The car carrying Stefano Carrino, 40, his wife Anna Maria Prioletta, 33, and the child was struck head on on Monday by a car driven by a man police believe was drunk.

In Puglia, also in the south, two elderly drivers were killed in a head on collision near Lecce. Also in Puglia, two people in their 20s were killed when their Jaguar struck a tree.

On Christmas night in northern Italy, four Nigerians were killed when their car hit a bus near Reggio Emilia.

The other deaths occurred in single-fatality crashes.
